How the Australian Points-Based Visa System Works for Americans

Australia scores everyone and invites the top scorers first. You don't just apply you submit your details, get ranked, and wait to be invited. Higher score means faster invite. Things like your age, work experience, English level, education, and partner skills all add up to a total points score.

You need at least 65 points to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). But in reality, many jobs are competitive, and successful applicants often need 80–90+ points to receive an invitation.

What This Really Means

The system is competitive, not automatic. For example, a typical American skilled worker (like a software engineer) might score:

  • Age (25–32): 30 points
  • English test: 10 points
  • Work experience: 10 points
  • Partner skills: 10 points

Total: around 60 points.

This is close, but often not enough to get an invitation in popular jobs. Most people need extra points from things like:

  • State nomination (adds 5 points)
  • Regional study or work experience
  • Higher English score (IELTS 8+)
  • Australian work experience

Key Thing to Understand

Australia does not pick applicants randomly or just based on eligibility. It ranks applicants and invites the highest scorers first. So your strategy matters small improvements in points can make a big difference in whether you get invited or wait for months or years.
